Start with a strong foundation.
You don’t need dozens of devices. A dependable hub, a few useful accessories, and thoughtfully chosen automations create the biggest improvement.

My Apple Home hubs are all HomePods: two full-size HomePods and three HomePod minis for home control, audio, and coverage.

01 · Real Automation From My Home
Stairs Safety Lighting
Motion At Either End · 2-Minute Timer
Motion sensors at both the top and bottom of the stairs trigger the lighting from either direction. The under-handrail LED strip and Philips Hue downlight at the top turn on automatically, then a two-minute timer turns them off.
1) Motion detected 2) Both lights turn on 3) Off after two minutes
Good Morning Scene
Bathroom HomePod mini · Siri Alarm
My morning routine starts with the Siri alarm on the HomePod mini in the bathroom. Lights fade in, a HomePod begins playing soft music, the kitchen’s undercabinet LED lighting turns on, and the connected coffee maker powers on.
A little less fumbling around—and a much better start to the day.
Window/Door-Open Energy Saver
Door Or Window Open · More Than 2 Minutes
When a door or window stays open for more than two minutes, a contact sensor triggers my energy-saving routine to help avoid wasting heating or cooling.
This is especially helpful in the fall and spring, when we open all the doors and windows to air out the house. We get to enjoy the fresh air without the heating and cooling system working against us.
Den Humidity Control
On At 70% · Off At 50%
My upstairs Ecobee Smart Thermostat provides the humidity reading for this routine. When humidity reaches 70%, the Midea dehumidifier turns on. When humidity drops to 50%, it turns off automatically.
Because here in the South, sometimes the air needs its own towel. 😂
Away Mode
Both Of Us Away · iPhone Location
Away Mode activates when my wife and I are both out of the house, based on our iPhones’ locations. Cameras arm, lights simulate someone being home, and important alerts reach my iPhone.
Occasionally, Checkers and Domino trigger a motion alert of their own. Apparently, the cats didn’t get the security memo.
Outside Accent Lighting
Sunset On · Separate 11:00 p.m. Routine
At sunset, my outdoor Hue lights turn on, along with the hallway salt lamp connected to a Meross Smart Plug and a Meross Smart Table Lamp.
A separate automation at 11:00 p.m. turns those lights off, locks all the doors, and closes the garage door in case I have forgotten.
